It's Your Contract Get Involved

  • Read your contract. Ask your steward to explain parts that seem unclear.
  • Stand firm for your rights. Let your steward know if you think management is acting unfairly.
  • Support your co-workers. If someone else isn't being treated fairly, offer your support. You strengthen your union by showing solidarity.
  • Back up your union leaders when they ask for your support.
  • Support campaigns to win better contracts. Join in activities to show your employer that you support your union.
  • Back other workers' campaigns for fair contracts. When other IBEW members or members of other unions win better contracts, that helps set higher standards that make it easier for your group to negotiate improvements. Other workers may ask you to help them by boycotting a certain product or attending a rally to demonstrate your support.

The IBEW Is Your Union

The IBEW is an organization that relies on members’ support and involvement for strength. The more active the members are, the stronger it is. It is a union with a clear record of dedication to the principles of fairness and dignity at the workplace. It is the largest, strongest and oldest union devoted to electrical workers

Your Local Union

You and your co-workers have the right to elect the officers, attend local union meetings where the members set policy for their officers to carry out and to vote on contracts that your representatives negotiate. Your local union has the main responsibility for enforcing your rights under the union contract.

Your Local Union Steward

Your most direct link to union representation at the worksite is your IBEW Local Union Steward.

Your steward is a co-worker trained to help represent union members, communicate with your local business manager and respond promptly to all complaints.

If a manager asks you a question that might lead to discipline, you have a legal right to have your union steward present during the questioning.
